Before we begin, here is a quick recap of the events leading up to the Constitution:

 

🌍 From Discovery to Claim

In 1497, John Cabot, under King Henry VII, gave England its first claim to North American land. Over time, the British Crown asserted authority through exploration rights and royal charters.

🏠 From Colonies to Communities

Beginning with Jamestown in 1607, English colonies took root along the Atlantic coast. These colonies developed local governments and a strong expectation of self-rule.

⚖️ From Rights to Resistance

By the 1700s, British policies imposed taxes, restricted trade, and reduced colonial self-government. Colonists increasingly resisted what they saw as violations of their rights as Englishmen.

🏛️ From Unity to Revolution

Colonial leaders united through the First Continental Congress and ultimately took up arms in 1775. What began as protest became the American Revolution.

In 1776, the United States Declaration of Independence formally declared separation from King George III, listing the abuses that justified independence and affirming fundamental human rights.

To ensure individual freedoms, the first ten amendments—known as the United States Bill of Rights—were added, followed by additional amendments refining the system over time.
